HIT IT AND QUIT IT- March 23, 2009

Another week of Monday night madness delivered to you, solo flight this time around. I forgot to bring my short stack of Eddie Bo (r.i.p.), would have been nice to toast a true funk master with more than 'Hook & Sling' Part 1 (only 2:30 made me hanker for much more).

So I'm outski for the next two weeks touring Singapore and China
(more info here). Tune in next week as Aucktown's Chef D brings the heat. We'll also be broadcasting a guest mix from Monkz (of Small Arms Fiya/Sheffield massive) and a radio broadcast of the my new mix 'The New Deal 1.0'.

Jesse Gould- Out Of Work (Outerdrive Edit)

Party people. I've been hustling trying to get ready for the pending Recloose Asia Tour, thus I'm a little behind on this week's Hit It and Quit It posting. In the meantime I thought I'd share this appropriately somber disco stomper edited by my man Andrew Shearer of the mighty Outer Drive show on George FM (they've just started doing the slot after me, high fives abound....). Top work!

DESIGNED BY MACHINE, The Loud Sound Of Graphics (NEW BOOK OUT NOW)

Just in case you're not familiar with the Dutch art duo Machine (responsible for all the Kindred Spirits and 'Perfect Timing' album covers), allow me hip you...

read on....

DESIGNED BY MACHINE-The Loud Sound of Graphics

(Paul du Bois-Reymond & Mark Klaverstijn)

Fuelled by earlier teenage exploits into graffiti and comics, then traditionally schooled in graphic design at the Rietveld Academy, the Amsterdam-based design collective Machine has added a new chapter to innovative design originating from the Netherlands. Before dance music, live video projection, instant global reach and interactive means entered the mainstream, Klaverstijn and Du Bois-Reymond were amongst the first generation of designers to fully adopt and adapt to this different reality in their own recognizable way. From the start of their first collective called DEPT (1996-2001), Machine has consistently produced graphic designs for club flyers and posters, publications, record and CD covers and T-shirts – with projects for such clients as MTV; MARK Magazine; Kindred Spirits Records; Club Paradiso; Nike and the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam. Generously and clearly illustrated with full colour spreads throughout, the book also includes an introduction by Linda van Deursen, an essay by Adam Eeuwens and an interview conducted by Max Bruinsma with the duo behind the collective.

HIT IT AND QUIT IT - March 9, 2009

Kia ora true believers. The latest installment of Hit It and Quit It is now live. This edition entails some nutty disco, soul, and funk tag with my main man and seminal Auckland Dj/Producer Andy 'Submariner' Morton. I first met Andy back in 2000 on his virgin trip to the Detroit Electronic Music Festival with Mark De Clive Lowe (where I also met fellow Aucklander Manuel Bundy) and its been a real pleasure getting to hang with him in New Zealand as well as regularly frequent the mighty Turnaround night he founded 6 years ago with Manuel and Cian.

I'll have some more posts before the next show (including a 'Herbie Loves Rhodes' floppy 7" I've been wanting to post for awhile).

Next week? Very special guest mix from our man Domu!

Inter Mission

*** UPDATE.... THIS WEEK'S HIQI NOW LIVE... TWO POSTS BACK. ALL THERE FOR YOU!

Just uploading this week's HIQI now... but in the meantime wanted to remind any in the Auckland area this Saturday the Recloose Live Band (aka STARBLAZERS) will be getting down at the Red Square area of the Auckland Festival. Jefe @ Mukuna says its the most recommended gig in Mukuna history (over Stevie Wonder... what?). Anyways, that probably puts a little pressure on us to bring the noise. Hope to see you there....

And this is so dope. Kutiman in deep youtube concentration. Thanks for the heads up Jamie...

Let Me Introduce the Band

The summer has been a lot of fun in New Zealand, and I owe a lot of this to the band I've been hitting with (The Recloose Live Band aka STARBLAZERS). Being that we've done a string of gigs over the season I'm often faced with finding a creative way to introduce them while we're performing. These cats are blowing their asses off thus they deserve some dap right?

Well, I did a little homework and I think I've found the model of models, the band intro template, my new modus operandi. This is the best band intro I think I've ever seen, and what a band (moves!). My favorite is the slimy host copping cuddles from the girls (a la Richard Dawson):
